Update 6/26/2007: The official voice and data plans have been revealed.

Another day, another complete lack of solid information on iPhone data/voice plan rates, which (in our opinion) is the single most important piece of the launch day puzzle still left undiscovered.

Today’s idle speculation comes in from The Boy Genius Report, who is reportedly quoting a high-level AT&T source:

The iPhone data plan will be around $34.99-$44.99 and feature unlimited data, and either 2000 text messages, or unlimited text messages (we still have not confirmed which, but unlimited text messages would be awesome).

$34.95 may be a bit steeper than their current $20/month “smart phone” plan, but it’s significantly more tolerable than the $99.95 rumor from yesterday.

Of course, all this absurdly high rate buzz could be astroturfed just to make us, the consumers, feel that $34.95 ain’t so bad in comparison to $99, even though it’s 150% higher than the current going rate of $20. In fact, I’d wager that half the rumors and memes in circulation are plants… just to fuel the machine

Notice how in the week leading up to launch, a single buzz item dominates each day? That’s how it works, folks. Masterful marketing.

Regardless, let’s hope that tomorrow’s rumors are even lower, even if the pill’s getting progressively easier to swallow.

And yeah, rumor, so salt and all that.
