YouTube on the iPhone

News No Comments »

Apple announced this morning that a special YouTube application will be available on the iPhone at launch.

This seems to indicate that the reports of no Flash support on the platform are to be trusted.

YouTube has indicated that they’ve been converting their library to H.264 format — the iTV and iPhone might be two reasons why.

Upgraded iPhone Specs

News No Comments »

Apple announced today that shipping iPhones will have significantly improved battery life than the original estimates, and “optical quality” screen coating that will be much more scratch resistant than the prototypes.

New specs are: 8 hours of talk time (up from 4.5) and 24 hours of audio playback (up from 12).

A talk time chart and competitive analysis vs other smart phones are also available.

That’s pretty high battery life for such a full featured cellular/mobile handset. We’ll be doing some investigating on real-world usage after launch.

Apple-Built Car Navigation?!?!?

Buzz No Comments »

German magazine Focus has a rather interesting tidbit today.

Apparently they have word that Apple is partnering with Mercedes to build an in-car navigation system. This seems a little strange at first until you realize the Google Maps integration Apple’s been developing, and the fact that they’ve never quite managed to get in-car iPod integration as elegant as it should be.

Perhaps an Apple-branded built-in headunit that combines stereo, iPod and navigation would be the logical workaround for clunky car to iPod interfaces?

After using the “elegant” BMW/Mini Apple branded iPod dock, we’re watching this one with interest.

Developers are already beginning to brainstorm and develop proof-of-concept applications for the iPhone. iPhone Geek won’t be publishing dedicated entries or reviews for apps until they’ve been tested and actually confirmed working on the device. We’re working on a few of our own, and I must say that there is a lot of guesswork involved at the moment in exactly how the pages will render, and what javascript will actually work — both key considerations when designing web apps for the little bugger. One of our first applications for the iPhone will actually be a meta-app. We’re starting to collect and review applications that are designed specifically for the iPhone’s browser, which will be compiled into an all in one applications directory homepage of sorts.

If anyone has any specific ideas of how they’d like to see this work, please let us know!
